EFFECT OF STEM CUTTING ON THE GARLIC CROP AMPELO (Allium ampeloprasum L. ) growing in Sonora, Mexico .

Giant garlic var. Ampelo is considered as an alternative crop inSonora , Mexico . With the main objective to get better quality and promote maturity this study was performed in Costa de Hermosillo. Clove planting was in October 2007, with population a density of 50,000 plants per hectare. A randomized complete block design was used with three stem cuts: 20 cms, 40 cms just at the moment of the stem presence, and a control.
The best treatment was with cutting at the 40 cms. Yielding an average of 20.21 tonha-1 . and a bulb diameter of79.6 mm . The second best treatment was at the moment of stem presence with 18.86 tonha-1. and a bulb diameter of 78.7 mm . Cutting at 20 cms. yield 18.54 tonha-1. and bulb diameter of 77.6. There no was significative differences among tratments. Control got lowest yield with 17.29 tonha-1. and a bulb diameter of 73.7 mm showing a significative differences with other treatments. results indicate the stem cutting at 20, 40 cms and at stem presence can improve Quality and yield in Ampelo giant garlic growing in Sonora, Mexico.
