St. Louis: The Spooky and the Supernatural Sunday, July 26, 2009 6:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. This itinerary is a haunted history tour of St. Louis with stops at the Lemp Mansion, Lafayette Park and Square and Midtown St. Louis. Boo! Tonight you will visit some of the spookiest sights in St. Louis. Your tour will include the haunted history and spine-tingling stories of St. Louis. Hear the fascinating history of the amazing cave systems beneath St. Louis told en route to your first stop, the Lemp Mansion. Built in the 1860s, it was the home of William J. Lemp, one of the best-known beer barons of the city. In 1980, LIFE Magazine featured the 33-room mansion as one of the most haunted places in America. Explore Lafayette Park and Square, the location of several haunted sightings. Among the most discussed sighting is of three Civil War soldiers in the park, gathered around a fire, appearing to warm themselves before they quietly disappear. Your next spooky sight will be a stop in Midtown. Enjoy a view of Powell Symphony Hall, home of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, where it is said that a spirit nicknamed "George" has been seen wearing a white suit and hat. Employees have reported hearing George making noises, playing with the lights and that he seems to haunt many of the back rooms of the building. Stand on the green where the rectory of St. Francis Xavier College Church once stood. In 1949, an exorcism took place at Alexian Brothers Hospital in South St. Louis and at the rectory which was located between the Church and DuBourg Hall on Grand Avenue. These events were the basis for the famous movie "The Exorcist". To complete your visit to Midtown you will also see the Cupples House, a mansion built on what is now the campus of Saint Louis University by Samuel Cupples. It was reported by the St. Louis Globe Democrat that the ghost of Samuel Cupples had been seen roaming his residence. Cupples, a wood-product manufacturer, did not want his home to become a part of Saint Louis University. He was angry with the University because the building of DuBourg Hall blocked his view of Downtown St. Louis.
