ASHS Horticultural Landmark Dedication Ceremony

Objective(s):
The Missouri Botanical Garden has been selected to receive the prestigious Horticultural Landmark designation from the American Society for Horticultural Science. The American Society for Horticultural Science is the premier organization for horticultural scientists in the world today, with members in every state and in more than 60 other countries. Our members do field and laboratory research to develop and produce safe and nutritious vegetables and fruits and uniquely beautiful and utilitarian ornamental plants. Advanced postharvest technology ensures that farm-fresh quality is delivered to consumers, often thousands of miles away from production sites. Other members are specialists in communication and public service who disseminate research-derived information to horticultural stakeholders. Teachers of horticultural science and technology in our universities and community colleges are an important category of ASHS members that help prepare the next generation of horticulturists. Another group of members are practitioners in some aspect of commercial horticulture. The Society was organized in September 1903 at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in Boston. About 30 interested horticulturalists attended this meeting with Liberty Hyde Bailey, the Father of American Horticulture, presiding. Our annual conference consistently attracts more than 1000 participants from around the world. We also publish three scholarly journals and a monthly newsletter, in addition to many web-based horticultural resources. The Horticultural Landmark designation is an honor bestowed upon the highest tier of horticultural sites around the world. Historical, scientific, aesthetic, or environmental sites are selected for their horticultural excellence. Recognizing the best in horticulture has always been an important part of the mission of the American Society for Horticultural Science.
