5:
Successful Strategies for Obtaining Specialty Crops Funding

Objective(s):
Becoming more competitive for specialty crops research and extension program funding
The workshop will discuss strategies for finding funding for horticultural research and/or outreach projects with a focus on two relatively new programs that have greatly increased available funding for horticulture: The Specialty Crops Research Initiative and the Specialty Crops Block Grants (administered through the departments of agriculture in each state). Together, these programs provide about $100 million in funding for specialty crops each year.
  • Tom Bewick: The Specialty Crops Research Initiative, Lessons from year 1.
  • Thomas Bjorkman: Specialty Crop Block Grants: A new funding opportunity.
  • George Hochmuth: Helping faculty develop strong SCRI proposals.

Panel discussion: What does it take to submit a successful SCRI grant? Panel members will include Nick Vorsa, Anish Malladi, and Jim Owen, who were all on proposals that were funded in last year’s SCRI program. They will discuss how their proposals were developed and answer questions from the audience.
