Objective(s):
The tour will begin at Miami International Airport Homeland Security and USDA inspection facilities to see the inspection process for imported vegetative cuttings and cut flowers. On our way to Everglades National Park (ENP), an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of International Importance, we will learn about many of the invasive insect pests that have invaded Florida, possibly to be spread elsewhere. At ENP we will visit the famous 6,600-acre Hole-in-the-Donut restoration area. Land that had been farmed for over 50 years and was overgrown with nonindigenous invasive plants, especially Brazilian pepper, is being reclaimed by native plants. This restoration is the result of a massive effort that included removing the soil down to the bedrock. We will also visit the Chekika Area of the park where rangers are battling invasive animals and additional invasive plants. No guarantees of python sightings but certainly many birds, some endangered.
