The rise of big data in research mirrors the increase in take up of online learning. Using computers to store, analyze and present data has become the norm not only in horticultural research but also in teaching and extension. On the other hand, there are several online learning tools that are available but very little attention has been paid to how well these courses actually support learners. The first part of this workshop aims to introduce valuable concepts and techniques in order to improve familiarity with advanced computing tools and increase efficiency of data management. The second part of the workshop describes the development, deployment, and evaluation of an synchronous online extension program for Tennessee nursery producers.
