Exotic Fruits for Hawaii

Objective(s):
Give an overview of exotic fruit crops that are adaptable to Hawaii's climate and conditions.
In this workshop the speakers will describe a number of exotic fruits that are grown in tropical and sub-tropical regions with potential as fruit crops in Hawaii. Examples of these crops are Bilimbi, kokum, ooray, rangpur (“Kona”) lime, Surinam cherry, durian, jackfruit, kitembilla, starfruit (carambola), peach palm, pili nut, longan, lychee, acerola, rambutan, and pulasan. Some of these crops are preserved as a living collection at the USDA Tropical Plant Genetic and Disease Research Unit at the University of Hawaii Waiakea Agricultural Experiment Station near Hilo, Hawaii. Current knowledge of genetic diversity, horticultural techniques, potential markets and horticultural challenges will also be discussed.
