2017 ASHS Annual Conference

The Path to Publication: Tools for Successful Academic Writing - CCA CEU Approved

Objective(s):
The objectives of this workshop are to 1) provide students with techniques to maximize writing productivity, 2) explore the differences between writing for journals vs. extension publications, 3) discuss collection and management of data with the goal of transforming of data into information, and information into knowledge, 4) provide a greater understanding of statistical analyses and the best ways to effectively present data and statistics for publication, and 5) provide a brief overview of the most logical path for graduate students and early career academics in publishing with ASHS.
All professional scientists, whether in academia, industry, or the government sector, are expected to publish the results of their work in one form or another. Scientific writing, in any format, is a skill that can be critical to the success of a graduate student, but many students lack a concrete understanding of what makes a successful publication. In this workshop, students will be able to apply the ideas and techniques discussed within to improve their writing and gain a greater understanding of data presentation and analyses, and the publication process. The topics covered will help students increase writing productivity, gain insight on how to effectively communicate to different audiences, understand how to collect, manage, and transform data, and proper ways to present data and statistics for publication. The speakers have expertise in scientific publishing (both research and extension), and will provide personal experiences and case studies that have helped them create successful publications.

Afterwards, there will be time for a Q and A session with the speakers, as well as Neal De Vos and M. LeRon Robbins, Editors in Chief of ASHS publications
